Join us to hear from Charles Feild about his book Feild Notes on Little Rock: History and Memoir 1622-2024.

Hear from Charles Feild about his book Feild Notes on Little Rock: History and Memoir 1622-2024 at our new location in the recently renovated CALS Main Library’s Darragh Center (now on the 5th floor of Main). The book blends Feild family history, deep archival research, and rich visual materials to tell a broader story of one southern town and the American South. Far from a nostalgic Old South tale, the book confronts the region’s past with irony and clear-eyed honesty, tracing four centuries of Feilds from Colonial Virginia to modern Arkansas through slavery, war, Reconstruction, segregation, and social change. Drawing on firsthand accounts from Confederate and Union soldiers, enslaved and emancipated people, and his own memories of Little Rock Central High in 1957, Feild dismantles myths and exposes truths about race, memory, and identity. Wry and reflective, Feild Notes on Little Rock asks enduring questions about who we are and how we got here. Dr. Feild will participate in a signing following the talk.

Charles Feild is a sixth-generation Arkansas native and Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He has given the annual UAMS History of Medicine Lecture and contributed to the CALS Encyclopedia of Arkansas. He enjoys history and storytelling, with an eye and ear for irony, and is a Life Member of the Arkansas History Association.
