As a part of CALS' Big Read celebration, we encourage participants to explore their own creativity through poetry. This event will encourage writers to experience nature and use those reflections to inspire their writing.
Sandy Longhorn, University of Central Arkansas Associate Professor of Creative Writing, will guide participants in writing poems inspired by the nature of Arkansas. Participants will meet at the CALS Main Library for an introduction from Professor Longhorn, then walk outdoors to Riverfront Park for writing time before re-convening back at the CALS Main Library for sharing.
CALS Big Read 2026 is a month-long celebration of the poetry collection Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude by Ross Gay. We are hosting a series of programs to inspire meaningful conversation, explore creativity, and build community. Participants in this workshop will receive a free copy of the book.
