Newspaper columnist John Archibald won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary and was the lead reporter on an investigative series that shared the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting.
Archibald, an Alabama native who joined the staff of The Birmingham News in 1986, is an expert on the politics of the American South and the forces that have shaped the region in recent decades. In 2020, Archibald was awarded a Nieman Foundation fellowship at Harvard University, where he studied the role of the media in shaping public perceptions of crime and whether crime reporting contributes to a culture of fear. In 2021, he co-hosted a podcast that won an Edward R. Murrow Award. He was a writer-in-residence at Boston University in 2023.
