We gather once a week with homeschooled kids in the community and have fun hanging out learning cool stuff.

9/2 Science: Explore the Rainforest—Learn about the Amazon rainforest, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Kids will investigate camouflage and animal adaptations and make a mini rainforest terrarium in a jar.

9/9 Technology: Discover Digital Maps—Learn how GPS works, use Google Earth to "travel" to famous landmarks in Spanish-speaking countries, and complete a digital mapping activity.

9/16 Engineering: Engineering Ancient Wonders—Explore the engineering of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations. Kids will then be challenged to build a pyramid or suspension bridge using recycled materials, popsicle sticks, or LEGO.

9/23 Art: Celebrate Color & Culture - Learn about Hispanic artists and traditional art forms. (EX: Alebrijes, papel picado, Talavera tile designs, molas, Frida Kahlo, or Carmen Lomas Garza.) Kids will then create their own colorful masterpiece inspired by these works.

9/30 Math: Patterns Around the World—Explore Mayan numerals and symmetry in Talavera tiles and tessellations, and create geometric patterns inspired by Latin American textiles.

About the branch

Oley E. Rooker Library is located in the southwestern area of Little Rock. The 13,500 square foot building provides books, audiovisual, and electronic materials for children, teens, and adults, as well as public computers, wireless access, programs for all age groups, and a meeting room.

Papel Picado Workshop

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a simple craft workshop. Families will learn what papel picado is, look at examples, and then fold and cut colorful tissue paper/lightweight construction paper to create banners to take home.

Banned Book Bingo
