Learn low-key photography while mastering manual camera settings. This hands-on class uses studio lighting to teach exposure, shadows, and creative control through real-world practice.

This hands-on class introduces low-key photography as a creative way to learn manual camera control and studio lighting fundamentals. Participants will work in the library’s video studio to explore how light, shadow, and exposure shape an image.

Through guided demonstrations and practice, you’ll learn how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together in manual mode, and how small lighting adjustments dramatically change mood and contrast. The class emphasizes intentional lighting, helping photographers move beyond automatic settings and gain confidence in controlling their camera.

Designed for beginners and hobbyists, this project-based session focuses on visual storytelling, problem-solving, and creative experimentation in a controlled studio environment. No prior studio or lighting experience is required.

Anyone is welcome to attend this class, but registration is required. You can register on this page.

only CALS patrons with a current library card who have taken Production Studio Orientation are eligible to use the Production Studio for their own projects. If you'd like to use the space, but don't yet have a library card, you can apply for one online or at your favorite CALS library.
