Exploring the Dream: A Writing Workshop Using Surrealism

Instructor SJ Poulton will guide writers and creators of all experience levels.

Inspired by the Tate Modern’s traveling exhibition, “Surrealism Beyond Borders”, this workshop invites writers to explore their own creative unconscious, opening themselves to play, the uncanny, and the potential of dreams to create reality. Pairing surrealist paintings and select short readings, this workshop provides structured writing exercises and classroom dialogue to generate new work. We will discuss issues of craft and sources of inspiration and create opportunities for support and sharing. Whether you’re getting started, feeling stuck in your current body of work, or just want to explore something new, this class is open to writers across genres and comes as an invitation to write together regardless of experience level.

SJ Poulton is a writer and teacher living in the Arkansas River Valley. A master’s candidate at the University of the South, SJ writes a weekly arts and culture column for the Courier and teaches workshops in the area and online.

ASL interpretation will be provided for all Six Bridges sessions held in CALS Ron Robinson Theater. ASL interpretation for sessions at other CALS locations and Six Bridges venues (including CALS Main Library) will be provided by request.
