CALS is proud to host Sapphic Cinema, a Dropping Hairpins Project 501(c)(3)-led program designed to showcase sapphic and gender-diverse stories to audiences in cities and states that don’t always get access to queer, progressive media.

Each Sapphic Cinema program features a film screening and talkback with an associate of the film.

The Lesbian Bar Project: FLINTA documents the complex and triumphant stories of the FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-Binary, Trans, Agender) communities in Cologne & Berlin; a reflection of where the queer community is headed internationally. Despite Lesbian Bars disappearing in Germany, there’s a growing FLINTA movement that epitomizes the evolution of queer culture. Featuring Boize Bar owner Payman Neziri, comedian Ricarda Hofmann, human rights activist Anbid Zaman, politician Tessa Ganserer, and party collectives Bebex and Girls Town.

After the film, hear from filmmaker Erica Rose. Erica Rose and Elina Street are the award-winning creators and directors of the documentary series The Lesbian Bar Project, which documents queer women/FLINTA bars around the world. LBP was founded in 2020 to celebrate, support, and amplify the remaining Lesbian Bars that exist in the United States. LBP raised over $250K for the bars during the pandemic. In 2022, the project grew into a documentary series on the ROKU Chanel and won a GLAAD Media Award and an Emmy. In 2024, LBP released its first international episode “FLINTA” highlighting the queer and lesbian nightlife culture in Germany, currently streaming on Germany’s largest streamer: RTL+. The episode received two Webbys and two Anthem Awards. The Lesbian Bar Project has over 1 billion impressions worldwide and has been featured in publications including: The New York Times, ABC, NBC, Huffington Post, CNN, CBS, NPR, Paper Mag, PBS, Bloomberg, The CUT, Forbes, amongst 100 other publications. With the help of Erica and Elina’s work, today there are now 38 Lesbian Bars in the United States and the number keeps growing. For more information: www.lesbianbarproject.com.
