For Will Eisner week, Dr. Duncan and Johnson will lead a workshop on creating biographical comics. Participants will aim to produce a 1-page comic. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Bring a friend or family member to interview!
Dr. Duncan will present a brief history on the graphic novel (comics) and its importance in literature— sharing historical examples as well as modern artists. Johnson will introduce participants to essential comic book practices including brainstorming, scripting, page layout, and drawing techniques.

Dr. Randy Duncan is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Henderson State University and former Director of the Center for Comics Studies. He is co-author of the widely used textbook The Power of Comics and Graphic Novels: Culture, Form and Context (Bloomsbury 2009; 2015; 2023) and Creating Comics as Journalism, Memoir and Nonfiction (Routledge 2015). He is co-editor of Critical Approaches to Comics: Theories and Methods (Routledge 2011), The Secret Origins of Comics Studies (Routledge 2017), and More Critical Approaches to Comics: Theories and Methods (Routledge 2019). Dr. Duncan is co-founder of the Comics Arts Conference, held each summer in San Diego. In 2012, Duncan received the Inkpot Award for Achievement in Comics Arts. For a decade, Duncan co-edited the Routledge Advances in Comics Studies series. He co-curated the Marvel: Universe of Super-Heroes exhibition that has been touring the United States and Europe since 2017. Duncan is one of the Eisner Awards judges for 2026. He recently published his first detective fiction anthology, Delphi Anthology One. Duncan is currently Chief Operating Officer of Delphi Creative/Consulting LLC.
Layet Johnson is an illustrator and sign painter in Little Rock, Arkansas. He holds an MFA from the University of Georgia in drawing and painting and has exhibited art internationally, with solo exhibitions in Arkansas at Good Weather and the Thea Foundation. His comics include "Sick Day" and "Pizza Therapy” in collaboration with writer Dan Gold (Los Angeles.) Johnson is a frequent cover illustrator for the Arkansas Times. Dee Brown Library is nestled in the heart of southwest Little Rock and offers patrons a wide variety of adult and children’s books as well as CDs and DVDs. The 13,500-square-feet library, which opened in 2002, provides access to public study rooms, a meeting room, and an outside deck and boardwalk that lead from Baseline Road to the library.
